DSWD Announces Free LRT-2 Rides for PWDs in Celebration of National Disability Rights Week

Manila: The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) will offer free rides to all persons with disabilities (PWD) from July 17 to 23 as part of this year's National Disability Rights Week (NDRW), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao stated that the initiative is a result of collaboration between the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), and the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), which is connected to the DSWD. Dumlao emphasized that the President's directive is for the government to come together to protect the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities and to create opportunities for them. The NDRW is aligned with Proclamation No. 597, which was signed in June 2024, dedicating July 17-23 annually to celebrate the rights of this sector.

Under this proclamation, the DSWD, through the NCDA, is tasked with leading, supervising, and coordinating the nationwide observance of the NDRW. Dumlao highlighted that the provision of free services significantly aids PWDs who frequently use public transportation for commuting to work and school.

According to the NCDA, the free rides will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the specified dates. PWDs can avail of the free rides by presenting their PWD IDs. Additionally, the DOTr is also considering implementing a 50 percent fare discount for vulnerable sectors, including persons with disabilities.
