DSWD Calls for Respectful Treatment of Individuals with Mental Health Conditions

Manila:The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has urged the public to responsibly handle interactions with individuals experiencing mental health conditions or psychosocial crises.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao emphasized the importance of treating these individuals with dignity, respect, privacy, and care. She stressed that their condition should not be exploited for public entertainment or to gain views on social media.

Dumlao's statement serves as a reminder to the public, media, and content creators to avoid sensationalizing individuals in vulnerable situations, highlighting a viral video that shows someone assisting a person who appeared to have a mental disability. She called for responsible handling of photos, videos, and personal information, urging against recording or sharing content that could sensationalize these individuals.

She further stated that protecting the dignity of individuals with mental health conditions is not only a compassionate act but also a matter of upholding their human rights. The pursuit of online views should not come at the expense of an individual's dignity, as such content can amplify stigma or cause harm to those involved and their families.

Dumlao also mentioned appropriate measures for assisting persons with disabilities, ensuring their rights and welfare are prioritized. Under the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, any act that ridicules or vilifies persons with disabilities is punishable by law.

The DSWD spokesperson reiterated that while helping individuals with mental health conditions is not discouraged, it should be done in compliance with existing laws to ensure protection and accountability.
