Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday began preparations for the possible effects of a low-pressure area (LPA) that state weather forecasters said has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

According to Philippines News Agency, Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD's Disaster Response Management Group emphasized the department's readiness to act, even though the LPA is still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Dumlao stated that the DSWD is actively monitoring the situation and is prepared to provide immediate assistance to families who may be affected.

Dumlao, who also serves as the DSWD spokesperson, highlighted that the department is working closely with field offices, local government units (LGUs), and other relevant agencies to ensure swift deployment of aid when necessary. She confirmed that a substantial number of family food packs (FFPs) and non-food items have been strategically prepositioned across the country.

The latest Disaster Response Operations Monitoring, Information, and Communication report indicates that more than 4.4 million boxes of FFPs are ready for distribution if the weather disturbance intensifies. Dumlao also noted that over PHP2.47 billion in standby funds are accessible at the DSWD Central Office and its field offices nationwide.

Dumlao further urged the public to stay informed by monitoring advisories from their respective LGUs and to identify their designated evacuation centers in advance. She reiterated the importance of following local government instructions and those of concerned agencies to ensure safety.

The DSWD remains on standby to provide necessary interventions, including food and non-food assistance, psychosocial support, and other relief services to affected individuals and families.
