DSWD releases educational aid to 27 Zambo City stampede victims

Information

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Zamboanga Peninsula (DSWD-9) released Tuesday the educational assistance of the Aug. 20 stampede victims here.

Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD-9 information officer, said 27 of the 29 victims of the incident have received their respective educational assistance from the agency.

Salvador said the beneficiaries comprised of elementary, high school, senior high and college students. They received an amount ranging from PHP1,000 to PHP4,000.

“The medical team of our office also conducted follow-up checkups on the victims of the stampede,” Salvador said.

The victims were injured during the Aug. 20 pandemonium at the entrance of a local public school when a huge number of people gathered to avail of the government’s educational assistance.

The stampede happened as people rushed in when security personnel opened the gate of the Zamboanga City High School (ZCHS)-Main Campus that houses the Agan Coliseum in Barangay Tetuan, the venue of the educational aid payout.

The victims included two males and 27 females who had been waiting in line for a chance to receive educational assistance from DSWD.

The educational assistance is given annually to indigent students as well as those studying in vocational or technical schools, state colleges, and universities.

The DSWD has allocated some PHP30 million for its educational assistance program in the region
