Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday assured beneficiaries of its Walang Gutom Program (WGP) of uninterrupted support amid rising food prices brought by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Undersecretary Edu Punay of the DSWD's Innovations and Program Development Group (IPDG) highlighted that the department is aware of how current global developments are impacting fuel and commodity prices, which in turn are significantly affecting the cost of living for Filipino families.
According to Philippines News Agency, Punay emphasized that the DSWD remains committed to ensuring vulnerable households continue to have access to adequate and nutritious food despite these challenges. He acknowledged the difficulties families face in budgeting for daily necessities and assured that the WGP would provide sufficient food for every household. The program also addresses concerns about ensuring enough nutritious food is available, particularly as food credits might be impacted by recent developments.
To tackle these issues, the WGP not only offers food credits but also provides practical advice and alternative methods for preparing nutritious meals within a budget. The program's Kalusugan, Kakayahan, at Kabuhayan (3K) Sessions empower beneficiaries by equipping them with skills to prepare healthy and affordable meals. These sessions, previously known as the Nutrition Education Sessions (NES) and Productivity Enhancement Sessions (PES), enhance the capabilities of beneficiaries by promoting practical skills and livelihood knowledge in coordination with agencies like the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Punay reassured beneficiaries of the department's unwavering support during these challenging times, promising continued delivery of programs that cater to their needs. Launched in 2023 and institutionalized in 2024 through Executive Order (EO) No. 44, the WGP stands as the Philippine government's flagship anti-hunger initiative, aligning with President Marcos's goal to combat food insecurity in the country.
