Manila: The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 1 has facilitated the refund of approximately PHP6.7 million to consumers who faced issues with services and products purchased in 2024. This initiative aims to address consumer grievances effectively.
According to Philippines News Agency, DTI-1 Consumer Protection Division Chief Robert Baniqued highlighted during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum that most complaints involved overpriced beauty products and services, non-compliance with persons with disabilities (PWDs) discounts, and defective products. Specifically, for beauty services, a total of PHP600,000 was refunded to seven complainants. Baniqued pointed out that consumers were often charged more than the initially advertised price due to factors such as skin type, urging consumers to be wary of offers that seem too good to be true.
DTI Officer in Charge and Regional Director Merlie Membrere also addressed the forum, advising consumers to exercise caution, particularly when purchasing products and services online. She recommended using legitimate online sellers and shopping platforms to ensure accountability for defective goods or services. Membrere emphasized the DTI's commitment to protecting consumers, noting that the department monitored 7,961 firms, including price checks, last year. All 495 consumer complaints received by DTI-1 were resolved, underscoring their dedication to consumer protection.
