Manila: After playing for the Philippines for many years, Denise Dy is taking on a new role as coach of the women's team in the Billie Jean King Cup this year. The team of Shaira Hope Rivera, Alexa Joy Milliam, Tennille Madis, and Stefi Marithe Aludo will see action in the BJK Cup Asia/Oceania Group II at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from June 16 to 21.
According to Philippines News Agency, the team has been training at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center since last month. The competition will also feature teams from Indonesia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Oceania, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. The format of the Asia/Oceania Group II includes two round-robin pools of five teams. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the promotional playoffs, with the winners being promoted to Group I next year, while the bottom nation in each group will be relegated to Group III.
Meanwhile, US-based Joseph Lizardo will coach the men's team, comprising Alberto Lim Jr., Eric Olivarez Jr., Ruben Gozales Jr., and Francis Casey Alcantara, in the Davis Cup. Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Pacific Oceania, Qatar, Iraq, Nepal, and the Philippines will compete in the Asia/Oceania Group IV in July. There will be two pools of four teams, with the No. 1 team in each pool playing a promotion playoff against the No. 2 team in the other pool. The No. 3 teams in each pool will play a relegation playoff against the No. 4 teams, with two nations being promoted and two being relegated.
