Manila: The Philippines' Alexandra "Alex" Eala conquered the Centre Court of Wimbledon on Saturday, dethroning world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland, 7-6(9), 6-2.

According to Philippines News Agency, the No. 29 seed Eala saved two set points in the 84-minute opening set en route to the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time.

Eala displayed remarkable skill, winning 71 break points compared to Swiatek's 27 and committing only 21 unforced errors while Swiatek had 44. This victory marks Eala as the first Filipino female to reach the third round of a Grand Slam and advance to the second week of a major in the Open era.

In an on-court interview, Eala expressed her amazement at reaching the second week of a Slam. She praised Swiatek as a phenomenal player and expressed gratitude for sharing the Centre Court with her at Wimbledon. Eala's record against top 10 opponents now stands at 7-4, including 3-0 on grass this season.

Swiatek acknowledged Eala's bravery during crucial moments and commented on the challenge she faced with Eala's serving rhythm. Eala had previously defeated Swiatek in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open last year and recently won two WTA 125 titles.

Eala is set to face No. 13 seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the round of 16. Eala previously defeated Paolini in their only meeting at the Dubai Open. Paolini advanced by defeating Maria Sakkari of Greece in just 66 minutes.

In other Wimbledon matches, Elise Mertens of Belgium upset second-seeded 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus advanced to face Naomi Osaka. Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, along with Swiss Belinda Bencic and Iva Jovic, also progressed to the Last 16.
