TACLOBAN CITY: The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas has reported a concerning rise in firecracker-related injuries and other health emergencies during the holiday season. Eight firecracker injuries were recorded, while hundreds of individuals required medical attention for various accidents linked to the festivities.
According to Philippines News Agency, the victims of firecracker-related injuries hailed from multiple areas, including Padre Burgos and Maasin City in Southern Leyte, Guiuan in Eastern Samar, and several towns in Leyte and Samar. The injuries, primarily affecting the eyes and hands, occurred between December 23 and 31, involving fireworks such as whistle bombs, kwitis (skyrockets), and blowing lantaka (portable cannons). All affected individuals were males aged between 11 and 40 years.
Since December 21, the DOH has also documented 515 injury cases, with 359 related to road accidents. Additional incidents involved animal bites, burns, falls, and bladed weapon injuries, predominantly in Samar province. Health facilities reported 12 fatalities resulting from accidents and health emergencies related to Christmas celebrations.
The health department also noted 208 cases of non-communicable diseases, including acute stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and bronchial asthma. These conditions are partly attributed to unhealthy diets prevalent during the holiday season, characterized by excessive consumption of sweets, salt, and fats.
In response to these incidents, the DOH regional office urged the public to prioritize safety during celebrations. They advised families to maintain nutritious diets, engage in regular exercise, and exercise caution with alcohol consumption, particularly when driving. The department also recommended participating in community fireworks displays as a safer alternative to personal firecracker use.
For the first time, the DOH has expanded its monitoring efforts to include illnesses related to unhealthy holiday habits, alongside traditional firecracker injuries. This includes tracking cases of acute stroke, caused by interruptions in blood supply to the brain, and acute coronary syndrome, which involves reduced blood flow to the heart.
The DOH's proactive measures aim to mitigate health risks and ensure safer celebrations for the Eastern Visayas community during the festive season.
