ECC Ready to Provide Benefits, Services to Workers During Calamities

Manila: Government and private sector employees who get sick or suffer accidents due to their work or during calamities, such as heavy rains and flooding, may seek assistance through the Employees' Compensation (EC) Program under the Employees' Compensation Commission (ECC) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

According to Philippines News Agency, the ECC, chaired by DOLE Secretary Francis Tolentino, announced its readiness to provide protection to workers through the benefits and services offered under the EC Program. The initiative is designed to support mandatory members of the Social Security System (SSS) - including self-employed members, domestic workers, and sea-based overseas Filipino workers - as well as members of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), including uniformed personnel.

The EC Program offers a range of benefits, including sickness and disability benefits, medical reimbursement, rehabilitation services, and death and funeral benefits for the families of workers who die due to work-related causes. These benefits are provided in addition to those received from the SSS and GSIS. Private sector workers can file an EC claim with the SSS, while public sector employees may do so with the GSIS. Employers are urged to ensure their contributions are current.

Workers at higher risk during adverse conditions include construction workers, delivery drivers, electric line workers, rescuers, and others required to work despite inclement weather and hazardous conditions. ECC Executive Director Kaima Via Velasquez emphasized the commission's commitment to improving service delivery and collaboration with various government agencies and the private sector to more swiftly assist workers in need, particularly during calamities.

During the rainy season and other calamities, Velasquez highlighted the importance for workers to be aware of their rights and benefits under the EC Program and to coordinate with the nearest ECC, SSS, or GSIS office if they fall ill or suffer an accident due to work. The ECC stressed the importance of being prepared and knowing how to obtain assistance when necessary during times of calamity.
