Legazpi city: International child-rights organization Educo is working with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to strengthen the country's school safety framework amid concerns over school violence. Educo Philippines Country Director Maria Alexandra Pura stated that the organization is helping to develop national guidelines on school safety, initially focused on disasters that disrupt children's education and learning continuity. These guidelines are being expanded to address risks to students' safety and well-being.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pura emphasized that addressing school violence requires a systemic approach with stronger child protection mechanisms. Educo's child protection work addresses issues such as bullying, sexual abuse and exploitation, online sexual abuse and exploitation, and other related concerns. The organization also provides mental health and psychosocial support, particularly during disasters and challenging situations, offering psychological first aid when necessary.
Pura highlighted the importance of teaching children to recognize when their peers may need support and encouraging them to seek help from trusted adults, including parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. She stressed the need for more personnel to monitor and support children's lives and well-being. Strengthening the child protection system remains a priority for Educo under its 2026-2030 strategic framework, which focuses on child protection, child participation, education, and humanitarian action.
Educo is hosting its 2026 Partnership Convergence in Legazpi City, bringing together local government units, government agencies, civil society organizations, and other partners to discuss programs and strategies for children.
