Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero has denied allegations that he is delaying the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. He emphasized that the Senate is committed to following its constitutional responsibilities and internal procedures.
According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero addressed these claims during an interview on GMA's Unang Hirit. He stated that the Senate is acting independently and not merely following the desires of the Speaker of the House. "We will do our job according to the law, according to the vision of the Senate, and not just according to the wishes of one person or the other Chamber," Escudero asserted.
Escudero highlighted that the House of Representatives itself took over two months to act on the impeachment complaint, questioning why the urgency is now being directed at the Senate. He rejected any allegations of political bias or personal protection for the Vice President, emphasizing his independence in decision-making.
Furthermore, Escudero mentioned that there are varying opinions among senators on whether the impeachment process could extend into the next Congress. He assured that discussions and voting on this issue would occur once it is brought to the Senate floor.
He reaffirmed that the impeachment proceedings remain active and that the Senate has adhered to all constitutional requirements. The Senate is anticipated to convene as an impeachment court and issue a summons to Vice President Duterte by June 11, just before Congress adjourns sine die on June 13.
