Manila: Far Eastern University sustained its impressive showing in the UAAP Season 87 rapid chess tournament to secure the top playoff seeds in three divisions at the Adamson Gym over the weekend. Oscar Cantela (Board 2) and Franklin Andes (Board 3) scored four points each in the boys division, while Lyn Getubig (Board 3) was also undefeated in four matches to put FEU-Diliman on top of the girls division.
According to Philippines News Agency, in the men's division, FIDE Master Mark Bacojo garnered 4.5 points after five rounds as the Tamaraws swept the elimination round with five consecutive wins. Angele Biete (Board 2) earned four points after five rounds for De La Salle University, which will face defending standard event champion University of Santo Tomas in the semifinals.
University of the Philippines gained a semifinal berth despite three straight losses on Day 2. The Fighting Maroons will meet the top-seeded Tamaraws for a spot in the gold-medal series. In the women's division, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University registered crucial wins to reach the semifinal round.
Meanwhile, FEU will battle UST for the championship in both the boys' and girls' divisions on March 29.
