Quezon City: Far Eastern University (FEU) kept its hopes alive for a semifinal spot by defeating Ateneo de Manila University, 65-54, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 men's basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday. The victory bolstered FEU's position as they prepare for their final elimination match against the University of the Philippines Maroons at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan on November 16. According to Philippines News Agency, the Tamaraws improved their record to 5-8, securing solo fifth place in the standings. Meanwhile, defending champions De La Salle University (11-1) and the University of the Philippines (9-2) have already secured their twice-to-beat advantages for the upcoming semifinals. The University of Santo Tomas (5-6), currently in fourth place, is engaged in a crucial match against the third-ranked University of the East (6-5). The outcome of this game will determine Ateneo's fate, as a win for UST would result in Ateneo (3-9) missing the Final Four for the first time since 2013. FEU's victory was powered by rookie Janrey Pasaol, who delivered an impressive performance with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Rojan Montemayor contributed significantly as well, scoring 13 points, including three crucial three-pointers. FEU coach Sean Chambers expressed his pride in the team's resilience and discipline, noting their positive response to rigorous practice sessions. Gambian center Mohamed Konateh played a pivotal role with 11 points and an impressive 21 rebounds. Additionally, Jorick Bautista and Royce Alforque each added eight points to the Tamaraws' tally. For Ateneo, Ian Espinosa led with 14 points and six assists, while Jared Bahay contributed nine points.
