Manila: Far Eastern University prevailed over College of Saint Benilde, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, Friday to secure the last twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Shakey's Super League (SSL) Unity Cup at San Andres Gym in Manila.
According to Philippines News Agency, outside spiker Alyzza Devosora scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth set as the Lady Tamaraws closed the second round with a 2-1 slate record to take the No. 2 spot in Pool F. FEU, winner of the SSL National Invitationals Batangas leg, will face University of the Philippines, the No. 3 seed in Pool E, on Tuesday.
"We were thinking about the quarterfinals. We had to have a good standing. We actually had a goal of 3-0, but it was a bit lacking, we were shaky, we lost our pass. So we improved that even more to get the last set," Devosora said.
CSB held a 7-1 run to wrest the lead at 21-19 but FEU rallied behind Gerzel Petallo and Devosora to seal the win. Petallo finished with 17 points while Cla Loresco had eight points. Zamantha Nolasco scored 14 points and Clydel Catarig added 12 points for the Lady Blazers, who closed the round with a 1-2 card. CSB will battle twice-to-beat Adamson.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines downed Ateneo de Manila University, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14, for its first win in three outings. Jelai Gajero scored 12 points while Irah Jaboneta and Sarah Ali chipped in eight and seven points, respectively.
'We talked about mental toughness, which was a problem for us in the previous games. That's what we're working out, to fight with heart and mind. We were chasing our first win because it's important for us to boost our confidence," Gajero said.
Faye Nisperos finished with 11 points for winless Ateneo, which will take on Pool F top seed and twice-to-beat University of Santo Tomas in the next round. Three-time champion National University will square off with San Beda University.
