Filipinos Targeted in Racist Riots in Northern Ireland – Embassy

London: The Philippine Embassy in London reported that Filipinos were among those targeted in racist riots in Northern Ireland, which were reportedly sparked by an alleged sexual assault involving two Romanian teenagers.

According to Philippines News Agency, the embassy confirmed in an advisory dated June 12 that Filipinos in the area have been affected by the unrest. In particular, a vehicle belonging to a Filipino resident was among those set on fire by rioters in the town of Ballymena.

The embassy expressed its concern over the situation, noting that innocent individuals have been caught in the turmoil. It assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and working with local authorities to ensure the safety and security of all Filipinos in the area.

Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom Teodoro Locsin Jr. is expected to visit Northern Ireland on June 13. His visit aims to assess the situation on the ground, engage with the Filipino community, and ensure that no further harm comes to them.

The embassy urged all Filipinos in Ballymena and nearby regions to remain vigilant, adhere to local authorities' advice, and reach out to the embassy for any urgent help needed. Local reports indicated that homes and vehicles were set ablaze in Ballymena during the second consecutive night of violent riots, which police have termed "racist thuggery."
