Bicol: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 5 (Bicol) has recently distributed 62-foot tuna handline fishing boats to various provinces within the region. This initiative aims to bolster the livelihoods of local fishers and ensure an adequate supply of fish. Each fishing boat is valued at PHP7 million.
According to Philippines News Agency, Rowena Briones, the spokesperson for BFAR-5, stated that the distribution involved three units of 62-foot boats and one ganet fishing boat. These were given as part of a larger series of distributions targeting the provinces of Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte, and Masbate. The boats come equipped with modern fishing technology designed to enhance both productivity and safety during deep-water fishing operations.
The newly distributed boats are specifically designed for handline fishing, providing fishers with the necessary tools to operate in deep waters effectively. The equipment included with the boats is intended to improve overall fishing efficiency and ensure safer fishing practices.
Briones also mentioned that while the primary use of these boats is for livelihood purposes and capture fishing, they can potentially serve other community functions. If the beneficiaries are in agreement, the boats could be employed for transportation or other community services, although the principal objective remains focused on fishing.
