Five Rebels Surrender and 13 Supporters Defect in Central Luzon During Holy Week

Central Luzon: Five communist rebels surrendered to the government while 13 supporters severed their ties with the underground movement in Central Luzon during the Holy Week, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 3 (Central Luzon) said on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the peaceful surrender of the communist terrorist group members and the withdrawal of support from their sympathizers are seen as indicators of the success of localized peace engagements. PRO-3 Director Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo emphasized this development in a statement.

The PRO-3 reported that the "wave of defections" took place in Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Bataan, and Olongapo City from April 13 to 20. This was attributed to intensified security operations and community-based peace engagements in the region.

Fajardo expressed openness to those who have been misled by violent ideologies, encouraging them to return to society and rebuild their lives.

In the same period, law enforcement units in Central Luzon recovered and confiscated a cache of weapons, including eight firearms and two explosive devices.

These actions are expected to significantly impede the operational capabilities of the remaining members of the communist group in the region. PRO-3 reiterated its dedication to sustained law enforcement, constructive dialogues, and peace-building efforts.
