Iloilo: A former rebel who decided to give up the armed struggle is now getting closer to reaching her dream of entering the fashion industry. Alias "Kenken," 24, walked the stage of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) -Miagao here on Thursday during the campus donning ceremony for graduating students of the BS Industrial Technology, Major in Fashion and Apparel program. She will formally graduate on June 11.
According to Philippines News Agency, a former medical officer of the dismantled Southern Panay Front of the New People's Army (NPA), Kenken joined the communist group in 2017 at the age of 19 after graduating from senior high school, as stated by Lt. Col. Arturo Balgos Jr., commanding officer of the 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB). She surrendered in December 2019 after spending around one year and six months in the underground movement. Her decision to leave was influenced by her concerns for her child's safety and her family's persistent urging for her to return.
Kenken was recruited by alias "Jerry," whom she met through text messaging and who eventually became her husband. Jerry served as the squad leader of the front at the time. The couple's decision to surrender was supported by the local government unit of Tubungan and facilitated by the 61IB. They received assistance through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which included a PHP65,000 package, a cow, and additional support from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The 61IB has supported Kenken throughout her education journey, from enrollment to her upcoming graduation from ISAT U. Kenken currently leads the Tubungan chapter of the Federation for Reform Initiatives Empowerment to National Development Services, an organization of former rebels that benefits from sustainable livelihood programs provided by the government.
Lt. Col. Balgos emphasized the importance of education for former rebels, noting a provincial ordinance that offers continuous education opportunities and scholarships. While Kenken was not a recipient of the scholarship program, she served as an inspiration for its creation. Her husband supports their livelihood project and works as a motorcycle taxi driver for additional income.
The call for former rebels to pursue education extends to those interested in tertiary or vocational studies, with some already completing senior high school through alternative education programs. Balgos encourages active NPA members to surrender, highlighting the opportunities available for education and a sustainable future.
