ILOILO CITY: The Free Wi-Fi for All - Free Public Internet Access Program is now operational in 567 sites throughout the Western Visayas region, as confirmed by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) on Tuesday. This initiative aims to provide free, fast, and secure internet access in public areas such as hospitals, educational institutions, and transportation terminals across the Philippines. According to Philippines News Agency, DICT Regional Director Ralph Joseph Moncatar shared details of the program during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas event. The program's objective is to maintain all active access points throughout the provinces, which include 125 in Aklan, 13 in Antique, 157 in Capiz, 24 in Guimaras, 210 in Iloilo, and 38 in Negros Occidental. Moncatar emphasized that geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas are prioritized for the installation of internet access. Furthermore, DICT plans to install the Broadband ng Masa in 450 sites in Antique. In addition to expa nding internet access, Moncatar stated that DICT is prepared to deploy communication facilities or its Mobile Operations Vehicle for Emergency (MOVE) in calamity-stricken areas as part of the Government Emergency Communications System (GECS) project. MOVE is equipped with essential communication tools such as a truck hub, mobile dispatch, motorcycle, drones, and VHF and HF radios, along with Starlink technology to ensure connectivity in emergencies. The Western Visayas region, along with Tacloban in Eastern Visayas, is a recipient of the MOVE sets. DICT also assured that they can coordinate with other regions possessing MOVE sets for additional support when required.
