Galvez Steps Down as Presidential Peace Adviser, Sarmiento to Succeed

Manila: Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. has resigned from his role as Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity, Malaca±ang announced Tuesday. In a text message, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed Galvez's decision to step down, although no reason was disclosed for his departure.

According to Philippines News Agency, Galvez will be succeeded by Mel Senen Sarmiento, who previously served as the secretary of the Interior and Local Government during the Noynoy Aquino administration. Galvez was first appointed to the post in December 2018 under former President Rodrigo R. Duterte and continued serving under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., making him one of the few officials to hold the position across two administrations.

Galvez, a former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, played a significant role in peace-building initiatives, particularly in advancing reconciliation efforts with various groups nationwide. Under the Duterte administration, he also led the government's pandemic response as head of the National Task Force Against Covid-19, overseeing vaccine procurement and broader response strategies.

President Marcos expressed his gratitude to Galvez for his leadership, particularly in advancing the implementation of signed peace agreements and sustaining gains in the Bangsamoro peace process. Castro highlighted Galvez's contributions as a soldier, peace negotiator, and adviser, stating that these reflect "a lifetime of service to the Republic, and the nation owes him a profound debt."

Castro explained that Sarmiento's appointment marks a transition toward stronger civilian leadership in the peace process, focusing on reconciliation, local governance, and socio-economic reintegration. She noted that the shift is timely as the Bangsamoro Region prepares for its first parliamentary elections and continued implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro. Sarmiento's background in local government and public administration equips him well for this task.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to a just and lasting peace and called on all peace partners, stakeholders, and communities to support Secretary Sarmiento as he takes on this vital role.
