Manila: The Bureau of Immigration's (BI) decision to relieve personnel suspected of facilitating the trafficking of Filipinos was lauded by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, calling it a positive step in the government's fight against transnational crime. 'The BI's move shows resolve in addressing human trafficking. The alarming rise in cases involving Filipinos seeking jobs abroad demands an urgent and unified government response,' Gatchalian said in a statement.

According to Philippines News Agency, BI Commissioner Joel Viado announced that several officers assigned at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were relieved of their posts. These officers were allegedly assisting Filipinos in traveling to Myanmar via Thailand. Viado made this statement during the arrival of repatriated trafficking victims at NAIA Terminal 1. Among the 176 returnees from Myanmar, 15 identified seven Immigration officers who reportedly helped them leave the country.

The BI, along with other government agencies, is set to continue its investigation into the trafficking scheme involving Filipinos lured into working in scam hubs in Myanmar. Gatchalian has called on the BI to strengthen cooperation with international law enforcement to dismantle these criminal networks. He also emphasized the need for a stronger crackdown on corruption and the rollout of a public awareness campaign against illegal recruitment. 'Walang scam kung walang corrupt (There will be no scam if there are no corrupt individuals),' he added.
