Gatchalian Urges LGUs to Boost Fight Against Child Malnutrition

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday called on local government units (LGUs) to strengthen efforts to address child malnutrition by enhancing nutrition-related services in schools and communities. Gatchalian emphasized the importance of implementing effective strategies to combat malnutrition among children, highlighting the role of LGUs in delivering essential programs and services.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian stressed the effective implementation of Republic Act 12199, or the Early Childhood Care and Development System Act, as crucial in mobilizing LGUs to promote children's health, nutrition, and early education. He urged local government units to enhance feeding programs in schools and communities, improve access to nutrition services, and invest in long-term strategies such as livelihood support for families in celebration of Nutrition Month.

Gatchalian highlighted the connection between proper nutrition and education outcomes, noting that malnutrition often leads to learning difficulties and developmental delays in children. He reiterated, "Ang laban para sa edukasyon ay sabay na laban kontra malnutrisyon (The fight for education is also a fight against malnutrition)."

He pointed out that sustained LGU action is vital in ensuring the physical and cognitive development of children, particularly in disadvantaged communities. This call to action seeks to address the critical issue of child malnutrition and improve the overall well-being and future prospects of children across the nation.
