Manila: Limited passenger and cargo operations have resumed at Makar Port in General Santos City after initial structural inspections, more than a week after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southeastern Mindanao on June 8.

According to Philippines News Agency, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced that the resumption of limited operations aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure uninterrupted service for people affected by the earthquake. Lopez emphasized the urgency of the port's repair, citing its significance to both the residents of GenSan and the local economy.

Philippine Ports Authority General Manager Jay Santiago, in a separate statement on Wednesday, confirmed that engineers found the port's rail-mounted gantry (RMG) wharf structurally sound, allowing it to safely accommodate regular vessel traffic and cargo. Santiago acknowledged the impact on port operations but assured that they can continue at a limited capacity.

He stated that the phased reopening of GenSan port would restore critical supply chains and economic activity while maintaining high safety standards. Santiago urged stakeholders, including shipping lines, cargo owners, and truckers, to coordinate with the Port Management Office of Soccskargen for updated operational schedules and any temporary restrictions.

Aside from the RMG wharf, other designated safe areas will be operational under strict safety protocols. Santiago noted that several facilities would remain restricted pending further evaluation and repair. The damaged sections of the new wharf expansion will have controlled access, while the eastern and western wharfs shall remain closed.

The Makar wharf's north gate weigh bridge, which sustained significant damage, will also remain out of service. Santiago assured that appropriate traffic management and alternative access arrangements are in place to facilitate cargo movement while ensuring safety within the port premises.

Port authority officials continue to monitor the structural integrity of all facilities at the Port of GenSan and are committed to necessary repair and rehabilitation efforts. However, the timeline for the full resumption of operations remains indefinite.
