Government Prepared for Super Typhoon Rosal; Heat-Related Work Suspension Under Consideration

Manila:Malacañang has assured the public of the government's readiness to mitigate the impact of Super Typhoon Rosal, with relevant agencies poised to implement disaster response operations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Department of Health (DOH) are all prepared to respond to the weather disturbance. Castro expressed hope that the rainfall brought by Rosal could alleviate the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, especially in drought-stricken areas. She urged residents expecting heavy rainfall to collect and store water.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported that Rosal is moving west-northwestward over the sea east of Northern Luzon at 25 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 215 kph and gusts up to 265 kph.

Furthermore, the government is reviewing a proposal to suspend work when the heat index reaches 40 degrees Celsius, as part of efforts to ensure public safety and comfort amid the strong El Niño. Castro recognized that while Filipinos are accustomed to hot weather, there is a need to consider the impacts of extreme heat. The President has directed a study to assess the appropriateness of the proposal for the well-being of citizens.
