‘Habagat’ Continues to Dampen Most of Philippines; Heavy Rains Expected in Some Areas

Manila: The southwest monsoon, locally known as 'habagat', is set to persist in bringing rain to various parts of the Philippines, with certain regions likely to experience heavy downpours, according to the national weather bureau on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the provinces of Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and Antique are expected to see monsoon rains. The weather conditions in these areas, characterized by moderate to heavy rainfall with occasional intense rains, could potentially lead to flooding or landslides, as reported by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 4 a.m. bulletin.

In addition, scattered rains and thunderstorms are anticipated in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Caraga, Davao Region, Pangasinan, and the remaining parts of Visayas, Central Luzon, and Mimaropa. The risk of flash floods or landslides remains due to the predicted moderate to heavy rains.

Other parts of the country are expected to continue experiencing isolated rain showers due to the influence of 'habagat' and localized thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds along with moderate to rough coastal waters are still prevalent across the western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas, while elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas.

Meanwhile, a tropical cyclone located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) was last observed 610 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales. Forecaster Benison Estareja noted that the cyclone is moving away from PAR, heading towards Southern China, and has slightly enhanced the southwest monsoon.
