Davao region: The southwest monsoon, locally referred to as 'habagat,' has impacted 1,931 families, totaling 5,663 individuals, across various parts of the Davao Region, as reported by the regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Region 11 has extended PHP4.1 million worth of assistance to the affected families. The adverse weather conditions have resulted in the destruction of 308 houses and damage to 275 others.
In Davao del Sur, the municipalities of Kiblawan and Sulop reported a combined total of 359 families, or 1,173 individuals, affected by the monsoon. Fortunately, no internally displaced persons or additional damaged houses were recorded in these areas. The DSWD-11 distributed 72 family food packs in Kiblawan and 286 food packs in Sulop, which amounted to PHP173,316.
The municipality of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental experienced the most severe impact, with 1,539 families, or 4,391 individuals, affected. The town reported 293 houses destroyed and 275 houses damaged. The relief assistance provided in this area included 1,200 family food packs on July 14, 50 family tents on July 17, followed by an additional 3,200 family food packs, 79 family tents, 500 hygiene kits, and 10 maternity kits on July 21. The total aid provided in Jose Abad Santos reached PHP4 million.
In Sarangani, 33 families, comprising 99 individuals, were affected, and 15 houses were destroyed. The DSWD-11 has assured continued coordination with local government units to ensure the timely delivery of food packs, tents, hygiene kits, and other essentials to the affected communities.
