Naga city: An estimated 1.2 million devotees gathered in Naga City for the fluvial procession of El Divino Rostro and Nuestra Se±ora de Pe±afrancia on Saturday, marking the first time the event was held at nighttime due to low tide. The annual religious tradition saw devotees, pilgrims, and visitors lining the route to witness the significant event.
According to Philippines News Agency, among the gathered faithful was 60-year-old Lito Almazar, a devotee of 'Ina' for 50 years. Almazar, who travels annually from Canaman to Naga City-a distance of about 14 kilometers-expressed his joy in participating in the procession. 'I come here every year to watch Ina's procession. I am happy that I can always come to Naga to visit Ina and see her,' he shared, adding that his devotion includes praying for a longer life and for his children to be spared from calamities and other difficulties.
Meanwhile, 48-year-old Lailane Nebria, a street vendor in Naga City and a devotee for over 30 years, emphasized the importance of the celebration to her livelihood. 'When Pe±afrancia comes, it is what we really look forward to because Ina's celebration is a big help to us,' Nebria stated. She stressed that regardless of the water conditions, the procession must continue, highlighting its significance to the devotees.
For 22-year-old Nathaniel Serrado from Bula town, the involvement of the youth is crucial in preserving the tradition. 'For me, it is important that we continue to remember our traditions as part of the community. We should not forget the miracles and what Ina has done,' said Serrado, a devotee for five years. He noted that the increasing exposure of young people to technology could reduce their interest in such traditional celebrations, and he feels a responsibility to demonstrate the value of these traditions.
The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) reported that the fluvial procession concluded peacefully. PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio noted that security operations were diligently conducted before, during, and after the event, with personnel strategically positioned in convergence areas, roadways, and other spots frequented by devotees. 'The peaceful conduct of this year's fluvial procession is a reflection of the collective effort of our police personnel, partner agencies, local government units, volunteers, stakeholders, and most importantly, our people,' Silvio remarked.
