Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday announced that the hog sector is prepared to tackle the potential threat of an African swine fever (ASF) resurgence during the rainy season.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DA's statement follows the country's experience with an ASF resurgence in the third quarter of 2024. Initial cases were recorded in several areas, including Lobo, Lian, Rosario, Calatagan, and Lipa City in Batangas.
Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa, a spokesperson for the DA, addressed the concerns of hog raisers regarding the upcoming rainy season, often referred to as the "third quarter storm." He stated that based on past experiences and solutions, the sector is ready to prevent a rise in ASF cases. De Mesa emphasized that water can serve as a vector for viruses, particularly ASF.
He also mentioned the government's efforts in controlling the situation through vaccination. The AVAC live vaccines from Vietnam have been administered in Central Luzon and Calabarzon. De Mesa noted that collaborative efforts between stakeholders, the DA, and local government units have proven effective, particularly in areas previously affected by ASF.
The vaccination campaign has significantly reduced the number of ASF cases in the country. The number of active barangays with ASF cases has decreased from nearly 600 to less than 30 this year. As of May 23, the number of barangays with active ASF cases had declined to 45 in 16 cities and municipalities, down from 67 barangays on May 9.
