Manila: The House of Representatives on Tuesday adopted House Resolution (HR) 1275 commending outgoing Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa for strengthening relations between the Philippines and South Korea.
According to Philippines News Agency, the resolution was introduced by Speaker Faustino 'Bojie' Dy III, House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander 'Sandro' Marcos of Ilocos Norte, and Rep. Marcelino Libanan. It acknowledges Ambassador Lee's significant contributions during his tenure, which have moved the partnership between the two nations toward deeper cooperation in areas such as security, agriculture, energy, and trade.
HR 1275 honors Lee following the completion of his three-year tour of duty as ambassador to the Philippines on July 9, 2026. The measure also takes cognizance of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s conferment on Lee of the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Datu, Grand Cross, Gold Distinction. The Order of Sikatuna is the country's diplomatic order of merit for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Philippines and strengthened friendship between nations.
The resolution highlights the historical significance of the Philippines being the first Southeast Asian country to establish diplomatic relations with South Korea on March 3, 1949. It also pays tribute to the shared sacrifices of Filipinos and Koreans during the Korean War in defense of freedom and democratic principles.
Lee's leadership was credited for the formal elevation of bilateral ties into a strategic partnership through the Joint Declaration signed on October 7, 2024. This strategic partnership facilitated 10 bilateral agreements covering defense procurement, agricultural modernization, and nuclear energy infrastructure.
Rep. Marcos emphasized, "Stronger relations with South Korea can help Filipino farmers gain better technology, support more reliable energy, generate investments, and improve our country's security capabilities. These are areas of cooperation that can create lasting benefits for ordinary families."
Moreover, the resolution recognized the expanded cooperation in security, trade, cultural exchanges, and efforts to address regional and global challenges. The House expressed support for President Marcos' recognition of Lee and affirmed the value the Philippines places on its historic alliance and continuing partnership with South Korea.
Copies of the resolution will be transmitted to Lee and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Manila.
