Manila: House Assistant Majority Leader and Bulacan Representative Agatha Paula Cruz on Tuesday expressed appreciation for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), noting its provision of hope and a clear direction for the nation through reforms aimed at addressing the needs of everyday Filipinos.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cruz emphasized that the President's legislative agenda showcases a strong dedication to alleviating the burdens on Filipino families while promoting economic growth. She stated, "His SONA delivered hope and direction by focusing on reforms that improve the daily lives of Filipinos."

Key proposals presented in the President's address included expanding income tax exemptions, abolishing the minimum corporate income tax on small businesses, granting tax amnesty, and removing systems loss charges that contribute to elevated electricity bills. Cruz highlighted that these measures would offer substantial relief to workers, consumers, and entrepreneurs facing escalating living costs.

She also praised the President's firm commitment to defending the country's sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea, stating, "His unwavering stand on the West Philippine Sea affirms that our sovereignty will always be protected while we pursue peace through international law."

Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun of Zambales remarked that the President's fifth SONA provided Congress with a tangible work program for the administration's final two years, built on measurable commitments encompassing household expenses, public services, accountability, and national sovereignty. He emphasized that the President outlined specific measures for lawmakers to convert into legislation, while noting that the speech's success would ultimately rely on its implementation.

Khonghun added, "Hindi ito SONA na puro palakpak lamang ang partisipasyon ng Kongreso. May malinaw na trabaho para sa amin: bawasan ang buwis, pababain ang singil sa kuryente, at palakasin ang paaralan at ospital (This is not a SONA where Congress' participation is limited to providing applause. There's a clear job for us: reduce the taxes, lower electric bills, strengthen schools and hospitals)."

Khonghun further noted that the President's proposals directly address the financial concerns of workers, small businesses, and households, providing Congress with concrete measures to pursue rather than broad policy declarations. He also welcomed the President's reaffirmation of the country's position on the West Philippine Sea, particularly his commitment to uphold the final and binding 2016 Arbitral Award and to utilize every peaceful and legal means available to defend the country's sovereign rights.
