Manila: The International Criminal Court (ICC) is not blind to the truth about the deadly anti-narcotics campaign launched by former president Rodrigo Duterte, Malaca±ang stated on Tuesday. The Palace's remarks come as Duterte's defense lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, plans to present the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations' report on Duterte's arrest to the ICC, which has been described as politically motivated to incapacitate his family.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire expressed skepticism regarding the submission of the Senate report, suggesting it might backfire on Duterte's defense. She noted that if the ICC judges examine the investigation process and its execution, they would not overlook the truth behind the situation. Claire advised that Duterte's legal team should focus on defending the former president rather than relying on the Senate report.
Claire further critiqued Kaufman, urging him to concentrate on substantiated defenses in light of Duterte's previous admission of potentially increasing extrajudicial killings. She emphasized the importance of Kaufman adequately researching the facts, particularly given the fees he reportedly demands, and advised him to focus on the allegations and admissions related to Duterte's war on drugs.
She also addressed concerns about Duterte's health, following claims by his wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, that he is currently in poor health. Claire assured that the ICC in The Hague, where Duterte is held, would ensure his well-being and emphasized the importance of exercise for his health.
Duterte is presently in ICC custody in The Hague, Netherlands, facing charges of crimes against humanity linked to his administration's war on drugs, which spanned from November 1, 2011, to March 16, 2019.
