Ilocos Norte Achieves ASF Recovery Status, Boosting Local Hog Industry

Doha:Ilocos Norte Ilocos Norte has been recognized as one of the provinces that have successfully recovered from African swine fever (ASF), marking a crucial milestone for the local hog industry. This recognition is expected to aid in the revival and protection of swine production in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, provincial veterinarian Dr. Loida Valenzuela confirmed the recovery on Wednesday, following recognition from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry. The province's efforts included strengthening disease surveillance, implementing biosecurity measures, and coordinating with relevant agencies and local government units to contain the spread of ASF.

Dr. Valenzuela noted that this recovery is anticipated to increase confidence among hog raisers, support the gradual revival of swine production, and help restore livelihood opportunities for farmers and stakeholders in the livestock industry affected by the disease. Previous ASF outbreaks had severely impacted the hog industry, leading to significant livestock losses and disruptions in pork production and supply.

The Provincial Veterinary Office emphasized the continued need for vigilance and cooperation among livestock stakeholders to prevent the reintroduction and spread of ASF. Local authorities and stakeholders were urged to maintain farm biosecurity, regulate the movement of live pigs and pork products, and report any suspected cases promptly.

Dr. Valenzuela stated, "The province's recognition as an ASF-recovered area signals renewed hope for hog raisers and the local livestock industry. Let us continue to be vigilant to protect animal health and livelihood."

Other provinces that have achieved ASF recovery status include Ilocos Sur, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon, Marinduque, Albay, Sorsogon, Antique, Guimaras, Eastern Samar, Camiguin, and Lanao Del Norte.
