Ilocos norte: The Ilocos Norte provincial government has earmarked PHP25 million for the construction of 23 rainwater catchment facilities to mitigate the effects of prolonged dry conditions and the anticipated impacts of El Ni±o.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcell Tabije, the officer of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), confirmed the allocation during a recent meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Tabije emphasized the urgency of the investment as communities face increasing challenges related to water resource management during reduced rainfall periods.

The Provincial Engineering Office, in collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), has designed elevated steel water tanks to be installed near BFP stations. The priority areas for these installations include Batac City and the municipalities of Paoay, Solsona, and San Nicolas. Additionally, BFP stations in Badoc, Bacarra, Banna, Burgos, Carasi, Currimao, Laoag City, Marcos, Pagudpud, Paoay, Pasuquin, Piddig, Solsona, and Vintar are prepared for installation.

The provincial government also encourages households, schools, and communities to set up rainwater catchment systems. These systems aim to collect and store rainwater for future use, potentially providing a supplementary water source for household, agricultural, and institutional needs, subject to design and safety standards.

For agricultural communities, the rainwater catchment facilities can alleviate pressure on existing water sources during dry spells. Tabije highlighted the importance of constructing these facilities in advance to bolster the communities' water reserves and enhance their ability to withstand water shortages.
