Ilocos norte: Ilocos Norte province is determined to remove dangling and 'spaghetti wires' from its main thoroughfares for clearer skies and a much safer community. This was after members of the 13th Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) approved the Anti-Spaghetti Wire Ordinance of 2025 in its final reading on Monday afternoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ilocos Norte board member Johanson Chua, the main proponent of Provincial Ordinance 2025-07-005, highlighted that tangled and unsightly overhead wires are common throughout the province. These wires pose risks such as fire hazards, accidents, and service disruptions, especially during emergencies.
Chua explained that these tangled wires could lead to overloading and safety hazards. While expanding outlets this way might seem convenient, it is discouraged due to overheating, circuit breaker tripping, and electrical fires.
The new ordinance aims to regulate safety and aesthetic standards for overhead wires. It includes requirements for vertical clearance, removal of abandoned wires, and prevention of encroachments on private property. Chua mentioned that this is also part of the preparation for a planned underground cabling system, which is under consideration for future implementation in the city. Failure to comply with the ordinance will result in administrative fines of up to PHP5,000.
The ordinance mandates adherence to Republic Act 11361, the "Anti-Obstruction of Power Lines Act," ensuring clear sub-transmission and distribution systems free from dangerous obstructions in air spaces, on land, and in surrounding areas.
