Ilocos Norte Conducts Comprehensive Earthquake Drills to Enhance Public Safety

Ilocos norte: Local government units in Ilocos Norte, in collaboration with partner agencies, schools, and private establishments, conducted simultaneous earthquake drills on Friday to enhance readiness and improve response and emergency protocols. The initiative aligns with a directive from Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and ensuring public safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, the drills included various simulation exercises. At the Provincial Capitol, personnel and emergency responders used a boom truck to simulate rescuing a "victim" trapped inside a burning building. Additional drills involved search and rescue teams responding to a vehicular accident and evacuating employees during a simulated strong earthquake.

Marcel Tabije of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) emphasized that preparation is crucial for effective disaster response. Through these drills, potential challenges are identified, allowing for improved disaster management in collaboration with partner agencies.

Governor Marcos, who participated in the activities, praised the efforts and cooperation of all participants. The city governments of Laoag and Batac also took part, stressing the "duck, cover and hold" method during an earthquake.

Marcos urged residents to maintain a "Go Bag" containing essential survival items such as food, water, medicines, clothing, important documents, a radio, flashlight, and whistle. Earlier this week, the provincial government distributed "Go Bags" and life vests to families residing in high-risk areas.
