Ilocos norte: Ilocos Norte has become the first and only province in the Philippines to achieve a "good rating" at the Department of Health (DOH) Healthy Communities Awards 2025. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Rickson Balalio confirmed the recognition on Thursday after the DOH Ilocos Region highlighted local government units that have successfully strengthened health systems and promoted community wellness.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ilocos Norte's achievement signifies the province's high level of performance in delivering community-driven and sustainable health programs. Dr. Rickson Balalio noted that the national award validates the province's compliance with health-promoting standards, including the creation of safe open spaces, road safety, and active mobility. The province also focuses on maintaining smoke-free, vape-free, and drug-free environments, ensuring a sustainable natural environment, and providing liveable housing.
Ilocos Norte continues to prioritize accessible healthcare and food security through the expanded Local Government Support Fund (LGSF), as highlighted by Balalio. The provincial government is committed to maintaining functional health centers in various localities to ensure well-being and prevent congestion at the provincial hospital.
Since 2016, the province has been dedicated to building "three-generational" (3-G) parks that combine playgrounds with fitness centers. These parks offer secure recreational environments where children, adults, and seniors can engage in physical exercise and active play together.
