Ilocos Norte Launches First Automated Weather Station to Aid Farmers

Batac:Ilocos Norte has established its first automated weather station (AWS) as part of efforts to enhance climate-smart agriculture in the province. The AWS, located in Sitio Capaoayan, Barangay Tabug, aims to provide farmers with timely weather information to optimize farming operations and improve crop management.

According to Philippines News Agency, the project was initiated by the city government in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The weather station is expected to assist farmers in planning planting schedules, managing irrigation, and determining the appropriate timing for applying fertilizers and pesticides based on current weather conditions.

The data from the AWS will also aid in preparing agricultural advisories, allowing farmers to anticipate weather changes and take preventive measures against extreme weather events. Mayor Mark Christian Chua highlighted that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to integrate science and technology into farming, promoting climate-smart and resilient agriculture.

Jenny Onera, an integrated farm owner in Barangay Quiom, expressed gratitude for the AWS, noting its significance for local agriculture. The DOST Ilocos Region emphasized the project's alignment with Project SARAI (Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry), which focuses on advancing science, technology, and innovation in agriculture.

City agriculturist Allan Abad noted the increasing importance of reliable and localized weather information for farmers facing climate challenges such as prolonged dry spells and heavy rainfall. He mentioned ongoing efforts, including farmers' field schools in Batac's farming villages, to teach farmers practical solutions for protecting crops, conserving water, and ensuring consistent food harvests.
