Manila: The local government unit of Banna, Ilocos Norte, has issued a reminder to residents, business owners, and visitors to adhere to a municipal ordinance prohibiting the use of single-use plastic bags, plastic cellophane, sand bags, and polystyrene (styrofoam) food and beverage containers. This initiative is part of the municipality's broader strategy to manage waste effectively and promote environmental sustainability.
According to Philippines News Agency, Banna Mayor Mary Chrislyn Abadilla emphasized that the ban is a crucial component of the municipal government's efforts to reduce waste, safeguard the environment, and encourage sustainable practices within the community. The local ordinance specifically targets the use and distribution of items such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, cups, stirrers, and styrofoam food containers across government offices, public establishments, and other specified areas.
In an effort to foster a more sustainable environment, the ordinance encourages the transition to reusable, biodegradable, or environmentally friendly alternatives. Residents and businesses are urged to adopt alternatives such as native bags like bayong or woven bags, as well as using banana leaves, taro leaves, or eco bags. The municipal government expressed optimism in a statement, noting, "Through our collective efforts, we can significantly reduce plastic waste and protect the environment for future generations."
The ordinance stipulates penalties for violators, with fines ranging from PHP500 to PHP1,500 per offense for consumers. Business establishments may also face the cancellation of licenses if found in violation, underscoring the seriousness with which the local government is approaching this environmental initiative.
