Manila: The city government has set aside PHP25 million from its local disaster risk reduction and management fund to install solar energy systems at selected sites.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Raisa Tre±as announced the budget allocation during an interview, highlighting specific projects aimed at installing solar panels. "The PHP25 million is already the budget allotted for our solar systems installation in the evacuation center, emergency operations center, and government offices. That is our initiative for upgrading, for renewable, also we are looking into one of the initiatives for this (energy) crisis," she said. Tre±as noted that the installation of solar panels could lead to a 30 to 40 percent reduction in electricity charges for some offices.

Tre±as was among the local chief executives to sign an agreement with the Department of Energy, pledging support for the Solar Solutions for Government: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Public Buildings Program. During the signing, she emphasized the local government's commitment to expanding solar usage in streetlights, which would reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

"By investing in renewable energy today, we are creating long-term savings, strengthening energy security, and building a city that is more resilient to the challenges of tomorrow," Tre±as stated.

In addition, Tre±as expressed her anticipation for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s upcoming State of the Nation Address, hoping he will address the energy crisis and flood control issues. "One of four expectations if he can give an input on how we can help solve the current global crisis that we are facing. Here in Iloilo, we are experiencing high prices of crude oil and diesel affecting our commuters and drivers," she said.
