Iloilo City: The 127th Independence Day is a fitting occasion to honor modern-day heroes as the country gathered to remember the courage, sacrifices, and dreams of Filipinos who fought with valor to gain freedom, according to the top official of the Department of Tourism in Western Visayas (DOT6) on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, speaking during the Independence Day rites at Plaza Libertad, DOT6 Regional Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez recognized tourism frontliners, cultural workers, entrepreneurs, and advocates who continue to share the stories of Iloilo and the country with the world. "Because of their passion and dedication, Iloilo City proudly welcomed over one million tourists last year, generating PHP9.4 billion in tourism revenues and creating inclusive economic opportunities for our communities," Rodriguez said.
She noted that the city is home to 119 DOT-accredited tourism establishments, a mark of its commitment to high-quality, hospitable experiences for visitors. Meanwhile, the tourism official said the legacy of the Filipino ancestors who fought for freedom lives on. "Their legacy lives on-not just in our history books-but in the very soul of our people: in our vibrant culture, our enduring traditions, and the beauty of our land that continues to inspire pride and unity," she added.
Rodriguez and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Tre±as led the wreath-laying ceremony before the monument of national hero Jose Rizal, which followed the hoisting of the Philippine flag at the historic Plaza Libertad. Tre±as, in his message, said the occasion did not only commemorate a historic milestone in the nation's journey to freedom but also reflected on the progress made, most especially in Iloilo City.
"In recent years, Iloilo City has become a model for good governance and innovation. Since 2023, more than 60 LGUs and national agencies have visited us to learn from our programs," Tre±as said. He emphasized that such progress is a result of dedication, sacrifice, and collective effort. "As we mark Independence Day, we also celebrate Iloilo City's journey as a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable urban hub," he added.
