Iloilo City Councilor Questions LTFRB’s Approval for Additional Blue Taxi Units

Iloilo city: A member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod is seeking clarification from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regarding the authorization for 100 units of “blue taxi” services to operate in Iloilo City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sedfrey Cabaluna, who chairs the council’s transportation committee, questioned the LTFRB’s decision-making process, particularly how the need for additional taxi units was assessed. During a media interview, Cabaluna emphasized the importance of understanding the demand that justified the issuance of new unit applications for the franchise.

Cabaluna highlighted that in prior discussions with the Association of Taxi Operators in Panay (ATOP), there were significant concerns about the increased competition from ride-hailing services. He also noted that current dialogues indicate no need for new taxi franchises due to insufficient demand.

While acknowledging the LTFRB’s authority to issue franchises, Cabaluna stressed the necessity for a transparent basis behind such decisions and the importance of informing the public. He also expressed concerns about the potential traffic impact, given the city’s limited space.

Additionally, Cabaluna sought clarification on the status of the franchise issuance. He recounted a recent interaction with LTFRB Regional Director Richard Osme±a, who mentioned that available franchises had been published since January, yet the slots remained unfilled until an operator from Davao applied.

Cabaluna plans to meet with ATOP again to discuss their concerns further.
