The Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) of this city is now taking the necessary preparations to ensure cleanliness and road access to public cemeteries are free from obstruction in anticipation of the influx of visiting public on Nov. 1 for Undas or All Saints’ Day.

“All road networks leading to our cemeteries in all districts have been assigned with street sweepers doing the clean-up drive,” said City ENRO head Engr. Neil Ravena in an interview Thursday.

While the three city-owned cemeteries in Barangays Tanza, City Proper; Jereos, La Paz; and Quintin Salas in Jaro district are being maintained whole year-round, he said.

He added that there are new niches in Tanza and Quintin Salas made particularly for Covid-19 deaths whose families could not afford cremation.

“It was sealed so they will not contaminate the area,” he added.

Other cemeteries not owned by the local government need to apply for permits, especially those that need to install lighting, Ravena said.

Trucks have been assigned to collect solid wastes and ensure cleanliness during Undas.

“Definitely it’s going to be a big volume coming from our cemeteries,” he said.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas this week announced that cemeteries and memorial parks in the city would be open to the visiting public as the city returns to normal.

He added that other offices of the city such as the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office together with the Iloilo City Police Office and other volunteer groups are also on hand to ensure the safe observance of Undas.
