Iloilo city: The city government is rolling out programs aimed at strengthening sports development, Mayor Raisa Tre±as said Monday. Tre±as gave the assurance as she led the awarding of cash incentives to 64 Iloilo City athletes who won medals at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa during the regular flag-raising ceremony.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tre±as stated, "We are developing programs, and we are making sure that we are supporting our children, especially in sports." She highlighted plans for La Paz Plaza's development and a new 1,500-seat gymnasium to provide a venue for practice. Additionally, the city-owned YMCA building is set to be transformed into a facility offering free swimming training.
Under the city's incentive scheme, athletes are recognized for their achievements with financial rewards. Gold medalists received PHP7,000 per medal, silver medalists PHP5,000, and bronze medalists PHP3,000. Coaches and assistant coaches were also acknowledged, each receiving PHP2,000 for their contributions.
Iloilo City athletes, as part of the Western Visayas delegation, achieved remarkable success at the national games, bringing home a total of 11 gold, 16 silver, and 37 bronze medals. The commitment to sports development aims to build on this success and provide ongoing support for the athletes.
