ILOILO CITY: The local government of Iloilo City is contemplating new regulations, or an outright ban, on the use of 'boga'-an improvised cannon known for its loud noise-following several injuries linked to its use during the holiday season. The move comes as authorities aim to enhance public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Iloilo City Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit (ICESU) reported seven fireworks-related injuries between December 21, 2024, and January 1, 2025. Of these, four cases were attributed to the use of boga, while others resulted from homemade firecrackers, such as triangles and camaras. Mayor Jerry Tre±as has called on the City Council to scrutinize existing ordinances and consider drafting new legislation that would regulate or ban the use, sale, and production of boga to prevent further injuries.
Mayor Tre±as emphasized the need for public vigilance, especially in safeguarding children, as boga use and production appear to continue beyond the festive period. The concern is not isolated to Iloilo City alone; in the broader Iloilo province, the Provincial Health Office reported 31 firework-related injuries within the same timeframe, with 17 cases linked to boga.
In response to these incidents, Brigadier General Jack Wanky, Director of Police Regional Office 6 (Western Visayas), announced his intention to recommend to the Regional Peace and Order Council that local governments enact ordinances prohibiting the use of boga during New Year celebrations. The recommendations aim to bolster public safety measures during holiday festivities.
