Iloilo: Dengue cases in Iloilo province have decreased by 39 percent from the previous year, yet health officials are urging residents to stay alert as transmissions continue and leptospirosis has resulted in 12 fatalities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) reported 2,668 dengue cases, including 12 deaths, from January 4 to August 29, as noted by the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit. This marks a reduction from 4,348 cases and 18 deaths during the same period in 2025.

IPHO head Dr. Maria Socorro Qui±on stated, "Even with the reduction in the overall provincial trend, there is still active transmission of dengue in the province." She highlighted that 266 new cases were recorded for the current morbidity week.

Estancia experienced the highest number of dengue cases at 241, including four deaths, which is a 198 percent rise from the same period last year, Qui±on explained. Other areas with significant case numbers include Calinog, Cabatuan, Passi City, Dumangas, Carles, Ajuy, Concepcion, Lambunao, and Alimodian.

Additional fatalities were reported in Sara, San Dionisio, Dingle, Miagao, and San Joaquin. Qui±on emphasized the need for intensified surveillance, investigation, and mosquito-control measures in these affected areas. She urged citizens to dispose of garbage appropriately and remove potential mosquito-breeding sites. Other preventive steps include early medical consultation, protection against mosquito bites, and participation in fogging and spraying activities when necessary.

Meanwhile, the province recorded 105 leptospirosis cases and 12 deaths during the same timeframe, reflecting an 11.89 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The PESU documented new leptospirosis cases in Passi City, Dingle, Pototan, Maasin, Cabatuan, and Leon. Among these, 38 cases were associated with agricultural activities, 24 with flooding, four with mud exposure, 18 with unknown causes, and 21 under other exposures.
