Iloilo city: A university professor from this city enjoined Ilonggos to honor reformist and national hero Graciano Lopez Jaena by 'seeking truth in an age of misinformation.' Prof. Joyce Christine Colon of the West Visayas State University walked through the life and works of the Ilonggo hero in her speech during the commemoration of the 169th birth anniversary of the Ilonggo hero on Thursday at the Graciano Lopez Jaena Park in the Jaro district.

According to Philippines News Agency, Colon emphasized the importance of rediscovering Lopez Jaena's contributions. "Beyond the names, accolades and the yearly tradition of wreath laying in his monuments around the country every Dec. 18, may we find the time to reread, rediscover, and continuously discover Graciano Lopez Jaena. His life and times are a reflection of the idea that literacy empowers and liberates people," Colon said.

Colon highlighted how Lopez Jaena's thoughts and ideas underscored the critical role of literacy and how he used his work to "expose the abuses and injustices perpetuated against the people." She remarked on the necessity of his fearless eloquence in today's age of widespread information and misinformation, advocating for a commitment to truth-telling.

Meanwhile, Mayor Raisa Tre±as reflected on Lopez Jaena's legacy, noting that he exemplified how the pen serves as a powerful instrument of reform. She stated that true patriotism begins with the courage to speak the truth, challenge injustice, and stand firm for what is right. "May his life and ideals continue to inspire us to be more engaged and responsible citizens, united in our pursuit of a just, inclusive, and progressive society," Tre±as said.

The commemoration featured a flag-raising ceremony, wreath-laying, and flower offering at the hero's statue. December 18 has been declared a public holiday in the city and province of Iloilo by Republic Act 6185, and Tre±as signed Executive Order No. 155 on Wednesday, declaring Dec. 18 as a special non-working holiday in Iloilo City.
