Baguio: A Muslim leader in Baguio urged the faithful to ensure a holistic observance of the holy month of Ramadan, which officially began in the Philippines on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Imam Samsodin Monid, president of the Baguio-Benguet Muslim Association, emphasized in a media interview that fasting during Ramadan extends beyond merely abstaining from food. Monid highlighted that fasting encompasses actions and speech, stressing the importance of refraining from harmful words and malicious speech during this sacred period.
Monid advised Muslims to avoid engaging in verbal disputes and to be cautious with social media postings, ensuring that their expressions do not carry negative connotations. He encouraged the faithful to dedicate their lives and time during Ramadan to reflect their commitment to reform and service to the Almighty.
Furthermore, Monid encouraged Muslims, particularly men, to pray at mosques as frequently as possible, though he acknowledged that prayers can also be conducted at home for those residing far from mosques. Baguio hosts ten mosques where Muslims can gather for prayers.
Ramadan is observed through fasting from dawn to sunset, along with prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. It is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, integral to the faith and practice of Muslims worldwide.
