Kanlaon volcano: Increased seismicity was observed in Kanlaon Volcano as it generated 64 volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes from midnight on Thursday, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). According to Philippines News Agency, the VT earthquakes, which occurred between 2 to 8 kilometers deep, were measured at magnitudes ranging from 0.9 to 2.9. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol explained that VT earthquakes occur when magma moves upward, putting stress on the surrounding rocks and producing seismic activity. He noted that an increase in VT earthquakes could indicate rising or moving magma within the volcano, signifying increased volcanic activity beneath the surface. Bacolcol further clarified that tectonic earthquakes, unlike VT earthquakes, occur due to stress buildup along faults and trenches. He stated that more frequent tectonic earthquakes suggest stress accumulation along these geological features. Despite the increased seismic activity, Kanlaon's sulfur dioxid e gas emission averaged 7,087 tonnes on Wednesday. Phivolcs has maintained Alert Level 2, indicating increasing unrest. However, the current seismic activity could lead to eruptive unrest, potentially raising the alert level. The Phivolcs has imposed a prohibition on entry into the 4-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone to minimize risks from volcanic hazards such as pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, and rockfalls. Residents living near river systems on the southern and western slopes, particularly those who have experienced lahars and muddy streamflows, are advised to take precautionary measures during heavy rainfall over the volcano, as these conditions may exacerbate volcanic hazards.
