Internet, Facebook Top News Sources Among Filipinos, Survey Reveals

Manila: Internet and Facebook are still the top two sources of political news and current affairs for Filipinos, based on the second quarter PAHAYAG survey. Television still ranked third based on the survey conducted from June 27 to 30 among 1,500 registered Filipino voters as respondents.

According to Philippines News Agency, "Daily news access is now largely driven by social media, with one in two voters citing it as their primary source. Meanwhile, television and streaming platforms remain a consistent part of daily life for one in three Filipino registered voters," PAHAYAG said in a news release on Wednesday.

The second quarter was a relatively strong quarter for traditional television news outlets. GMA7 (46 percent from 42 percent) and ABS-CBN (41 percent from 34 percent) post significant rebounds in high and very high trust ratings, particularly driven by improvements in North-Central Luzon.

Government and alternative channels like PTV4 (27 percent to 21 percent) and UNTV (23 percent to 18 percent) have "recorded notable gains in moderate trust, effectively reducing their low to no trust ratings."

In the print and digital news outlets category, the Manila Times (27 percent to 31 percent) and Business Mirror (14 percent to 17 percent) gained high trust. Several outlets, including Philippine Star, Business Mirror, Rappler, Summit Express, Sunstar Philippines, Abante, Politiko Online, and FYT Media, also grew in moderate trust.

The PAHAYAG survey was an independent, non-commissioned nationwide purposive sampling survey.
